2009-2010 College Football Bowl Predictions

USC Defeats Penn State in the 2009 Rose Bowl

Posted by CollegeBowlProjections.com On January - 2 - 2009

pete_carrollIt’s the second year in a row after watching the Rose Bowl we ask:  How is USC not in the national championship game?  How can this dominant program be excluded from the final game of the season? Are they receiving the respect they deserve?

What else do they need to do to prove they’re the best program in the country?  The Trojans lowest ranking at the end of the season since 2002 has been #4.  Are we dealing with another east coast bias?  Are voters sick of the USC monster?

Let’s create some rules in order for the best teams to be invited to the national championship game:

Rule 1: Get rid of the BCS and give us a 16 team playoff.

Rule 2: No Big Ten team can be included in another national championship game until the conference wins another Rose Bowl.

Rule 3: USC should never play another Thursday night game on the road.

Rule 4: If you lose a game at home you’re eliminated from the national championship game (Goodbye Florida.  Sorry but you’re living off the SEC reputation this year.  You have no business getting in this game when you lost to Ole Miss at home.)

Rule 5: If you have played a team on a neutral field then the losing team can’t be invited to the national championship game. (Goodbye Oklahoma.  Texas was completely robbed this year.)

Rule 6: BCS teams must play two BCS teams in their non-conference schedule each year.  Who isn’t so sick and tired of watching BCS teams beat up on a small school?  We only get 12 games each year!  Play a good team for crying out loud and let us really evaluate how good each conference is during the season.

Texas can blame their schedule for playing Florida Atlantic, UTEP and Rice this year.  If they had played a better non-conference schedule they probably would have been in the national championship.

Question: But what if they lost one of those non-conference BCS games?
Answer: They didn’t deserve to be in the national championship game.

We’ll create more rules until they fix this BCS mess.

Vanderbilt and Rice Win First Bowl Games Since the 1950s

Posted by CollegeBowlProjections.com On January - 1 - 2009

vanderbilt_commodores

College football fans pain through every season with this ridiculous BCS process.  We deal with watching lousy and meaningless bowl games for a couple of weeks during the holiday season.  Unless your team is playing in the bowl game it most likely won’t catch your interest (Oregon State and Pittsburgh should issue an apology to anyone who watched more than five minutes of the Sun Bowl this year).

At least  you’ve convinced your wife every year you must watch all of these games in order to avoid tedious errands or work around the house when you have a couple of days away from work.  Enjoy the chips and dip and try to catch a nap on the couch while you watch these very mediocre games.  If you’re not watching Florida-Oklahoma, USC-Penn State, or TCU-Boise State this season you’re really watching a game that means very little. A playoff system would fix this problem but that debate is for another day.

Occasionally the bowl games create a great reason to keep watching them.  The Rice Owls and Vanderbilt Commodores ended their bowl victory droughts this holiday season.  Vanderbilt hadn’t won a bowl game since 1955 and Rice was last victorious in 1954.  Can you imagine the jubilation of the fans for each of these schools on December 31st?  Can you imagine your favorite team not winning a bowl game for over 50 years?

Any sport fan can feel for these programs and their fans as they celebrated their bowl victory.  These programs alumni and fans finally had something to celebrate going into the next year. Fortunately most of us can’t understand the long wait they had to endure.  Congratulations Vanderbilt and Rice.  You’ve made a huge statement for the importance of bowl games every year.

Senior QB’s Getting it Done in the Bowl Games

Posted by CollegeBowlProjections.com On December - 30 - 2008

chase_danielWe are still early in the Bowl season but something has stood out to us so far, the senior quarterbacks are willing their teams to victory in the post season. Let’s look at some examples:

Pat White threw for a career high 332 yards and 3 TD’s and rushing for 55 yards while only throwing 1 interception to lead his team to a 31-30 victory over North Carolina in the Meineke Bowl.

Willie Tuitama capped off his college career with a 31-21 upset of BYU in the Vegas Bowl. Tui passed for 325 yards and 2 TD’s without throwing an interception.

The surprising start for Nate Longshore for California in the Emerald Bowl worked out well for the Bears. Longshore did not put up great numbers but was able to lead his team for a winning TD with just over 2 minutes to go in the game.

Much like Longshore, Heisman contender Chase Daniel struggled against Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl. In the end he lead his team to an overtime victory. It was the poise of Daniel that made the difference late in the game.

Finally, Mike Teel capped off his Rutgers career with a win against NC State in the Papajohns Bowl. Teel looked sharp throwing for 319 yards and 2 TD’s while throwing 1 interception.

This trend should continue throughout the Bowl season as we expect teams with senior QB’s to excel.
